LEGO Architecture

During my time working at The LEGO Group I was involved in the design of a range of new models for the Architecture Theme. Officially not my department, I was actually joining the Architecture team in meetings and briefings voluntarily as I love the Architecture Theme and after speaking with some friends in the department, we agreed that I could join their projects in my free time. Of the sets I was involved in, so far only the San Francisco model has been released to the public. It is an amazing model which captures the architecture of San Francisco in close scale with an animated and joyful aesthetic.

My involvement in the project was initially based primarily around research of San Francisco architecture; which buildings were not only visually iconic of the skyline, but also what architecture held historical value globally and importantly for the people of San Francisco. We wanted the set to represent more than the obvious tourist hotspots, but also to reflect San Francisco as a unique city with a unique culture.

Originally a wide selection of architecture was selected to be developed in brick form. I was involved in the creation of each component of the set - Golden Gate Bridge, Transamerica Pyramid, 555 California Street - and so on. Once several models were complete, including many that did not make the final set, we spent time perfecting the scale of each building to match one another, and also to arrange them in a set that met several criteria, including width, height, amount of bricks, total production cost, and geographical representation of the actual city.

The final product consists of several of San Fransisco's iconic architectural designs, in a layout that is visually balanced. The set conforms to the existing sets in the theme, within budget and size, making it attractive to those who already buy into the theme and for new customers. I enjoyed spending my extra time working with the Architecture team to create this set,

Due to confidentiality Disclosures between myself and The LEGO Group I am unable to present any images of development or prototypes, only official final visualisations.
