For BigJigs toys, a family run toy manufacturing company in South England, I was asked to answer a brief for a new accessory item for their already successful railway toy range. They wanted something that conformed to the existing range whilst adding a new sense of play. My answer was the interactive railway traffic light. Extremely simplistic in functionality and form, the traffic light adds a new level of third person play for children, who can make decisions as to whether the trains can stop or go. By turning the light box from green to red, children have added decision making, leadership and problem solving skills into their play.

The manufacture of the product is kept basic and cheap, to suit the companies financial considerations. To the left is an example of how the item might be sold, in a set of three. This cuts packaging for individual pieces and should suffice for the average train track set. As an accessory, it is a cheap manufacturing option which adds interactions to the railway set.

Below are some moodboards created for BigJigs during the ideation phase. Shape Sorters were also of interest but in the end only the Railway accessory was developed further.
